UEFA Investigates Zlatan Ibrahimovic Over Betting Firm Links

The European football governing body, UEFA, has initiated a disciplinary probe into Swedish football icon Zlatan Ibrahimovic and his suspected connections to a wagering firm.

FIFA’s Code of Ethics, Article 5, Paragraph 3, Section 23, stipulates that athletes cannot possess an interest in any entity, firm or organization that “promotes, brokers, arranges or conducts betting, gambling, lottery or similar activities or transactions related to football matches and competitions.” UEFA stated the investigation will concentrate on Ibrahimovic’s (pictured) purported financial interest in an undisclosed betting company, which would breach FIFA’s ethical code. Although UEFA did not reveal the operator Ibrahimovic is allegedly associated with, Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet reported earlier this month that the player holds a stake in Bethard through his company Unknown AB. Ibrahimovic, who competes for Italian Serie A club AC Milan, commenced collaborating with Bethard in March 2018 as an ambassador and in a development role.

The governing body, UEFA, initiated an investigation into alleged improper conduct. They cited Article 31.4 of their own disciplinary rules, which empowers their ethics and disciplinary inspectors to launch probes into such matters.

During this period, he was a member of the LA Galaxy, a Major League Soccer team.
