Svenska Spel Sponsors Swedish Electronic Ice Hockey Championship

The Swedish government-run gaming company, Svenska Spel, has revealed a new collaboration with the Swedish Ice Hockey Association and the Swedish Esports Federation (SESF). This partnership will see Svenska Spel become the primary sponsor for the 2020 Swedish Electronic Ice Hockey Championship.

The esports tournament, which utilizes EA Sports’ NHL 20, a game mirroring the popular sport in North America and Scandinavia, will be the central focus of the 2020 Swedish Electronic Ice Hockey Championship.

The 2020 Swedish Electronic Ice Hockey Championship, hosted by NHLGamer, a European esports tournament platform, is the leading organizer of electronic ice hockey competitions in the region. This year marks the championship’s second year.

The championship will feature both individual and team competitions, with players competing in 1-on-1 and 6-on-6 formats. The tournament will run for five weeks, from August to October, and will showcase the most skilled players in Swedish electronic ice hockey. To participate, at least half of each team’s members, including all team captains, must be Swedish citizens.

The championship finals will take place on October 2nd and 3rd and will be streamed live on Twitch, a live streaming platform owned by Amazon.

The Swedish betting company is delighted to be the primary sponsor of the Swedish Electronic Ice Hockey Championship. This sponsorship comes alongside their support of the Swedish Ice Hockey Association and the Swedish Esports Association. “We believe in merging traditional sports with esports,” stated Jimmy Sandberg, Sponsorship Project Manager at the betting company.

Christian Prahl, Business Manager of the Swedish Ice Hockey Association, shared similar thoughts, expressing, “We aim to connect with new audiences who are passionate about ice hockey and, in collaboration with the Swedish betting company, invigorate interest in esports. A core component of our strategy is to engage and enthuse more individuals about ice hockey.”

“In the current environment, it’s also a positive development to be able to provide more individuals with the opportunity to engage in ice hockey virtually. This serves as an excellent method to maintain the spirit of the game while we anticipate the return of the major ice hockey championships.”

The Swedish Ice Hockey Association made the difficult decision to terminate the remainder of the 2019-20 season in March, following requests from the Swedish league SHL and its affiliated organizations.

The association’s governing board unanimously decided to cancel all remaining matches across all levels, encompassing the second and third divisions, as well as the SDHL, a leading women’s ice hockey league globally.

Ice hockey associations across the globe, encompassing the UK, the United States, and Canada, concurrently made the decision to suspend their competitions.
