Austria Imposes €492,000 in Penalties on Illicit Gambling Ventures in Q1 2023

Austrian authorities imposed penalties of €492,000 on illicit gambling ventures in the initial three months of 2023.

This figure was disclosed alongside other data concerning tax avoidance and efforts to combat fraud during the first trimester of the year.

Austria’s Finance Minister, Magnus Brunner, asserted that unlawful activities have a detrimental effect on Austria’s economic landscape, creating an unfair advantage for legitimate businesses.

During the first quarter, law enforcement officials examined 46 properties, resulting in 27 criminal accusations. These accusations led to a total of €492,000 in fines.

In Vienna, a total of 20 criminal accusations were brought, leading to €300,000 in penalties alone.

By the end of the quarter, the police’s anti-fraud unit seized 76 unauthorized gaming devices in Salzburg.
