Tab NZ CEO Steps Down as Entain Partnership Takes Effect

Michael Todd, the top executive of Tab NZ, New Zealand’s betting firm, has declared his departure after the New Zealand government endorsed a new strategic alliance with Entain.

The deal, which was finalized in March, will see Entain assist Tab NZ in delivering wagering and broadcasting services to New Zealand for the next 25 years.

The government’s authorization signifies that the agreement will become effective on June 1st. Tab NZ states that the partnership will instantly generate economic advantages for three horse racing ventures and 38 national athletic organizations.

Mark Stewart, the head of Tab NZ, stated: “This approval fulfills a key suggestion from the 2018 Messara Report, and we are thrilled that the Minister for Racing has authorized this strategic partnership agreement.”

“Tab NZ is at a crucial juncture in its history, facing unparalleled rivalry from unregulated foreign operators and the current global economic challenges.”

The new arrangement will provide Tab NZ with financial backing, and the board has assured a substantial immediate boost in funding for horse racing initiatives over the next five years.

The minimum amount for the 2023-24 fiscal year will be NZ$170 million (approximately £86 million/€99 million/$107 million), a 36% increase from the current fiscal year.

The financial support for the subsequent four fiscal years will be NZ$175 million in the year 2024-25, NZ$180 million in the year 2025-26, NZ$185 million in the year 2026-27, and NZ$200 million in the year 2027-28.

In the meantime, national athletic organizations will get a portion of a one-time funding increase of NZ$15 million over the next three years. The New Zealand Sports Institute will also receive NZ$500,000 to put towards women’s athletics.

Furthermore, there will be a dedication of NZ$5 million in funding for harm mitigation. This includes NZ$4 million to expedite the deployment of facial recognition technology in 100 TAB locations and NZ$1 million in research funds to support gambling harm research.

“We believe this 25-year strategic alliance will change the landscape of sports wagering in New Zealand,” stated Entain Australia CEO Dean Shannon. “We are thrilled that it will help deliver substantial economic advantages to New Zealand’s three primary racing codes and numerous national athletic organizations.”

Tod Steps Down
Shortly after the government’s approval, Tab NZ also declared that Tod would be leaving his position as CEO.

Nick Roberts will assume the position on June 1, concentrating on transitioning the remaining Tab NZ into its future state.

The remaining legal entity will operate on a smaller scale, concentrating on the functions that Tab NZ retains.

These responsibilities encompass fulfilling legal requirements, overseeing Entain’s regulatory and commercial achievements, investigating fresh business ventures with Entain, and collaborating with the government to modernize New Zealand’s online gambling regulations.

Stuart remarked: “As General Counsel and subsequently Chief Transformation Officer, Nick has been a vital member of the team dedicated to ensuring the strategic partnership with Entain is a triumph.”

“Preserving Nick’s business acumen and legal expertise, particularly his experience and profound understanding of the New Zealand legislative landscape, the gambling ecosystem, and the contracts underpinning the Entain agreement, will be incredibly valuable to the Tab NZ board, our regulatory bodies, and the stakeholders who depend on Tab NZ’s funding.”

Roberts stated: “We have secured a transformative shift for the future of horse racing. Now it’s the responsibility of leaders throughout the racing industry to seize this chance and construct a sustainable operating model for the next five years, providing top-tier products and experiences for customers.

“Our sports partners will also reap the benefits of Entain’s investment in products and services. Several key national sporting organizations will be able to make substantial investments in participation and elite performance due to the additional funding Tab NZ will receive.”
