Arizona Coyotes Face Legal Battle Over Mobile Betting at Temporary ASU Venue

The Arizona hockey franchise is encountering resistance as they attempt to manage the realm of internet wagering during their interim move. As their new, cutting-edge stadium is under construction, the squad will be holding their matches at Arizona State University’s facility. They had intended to maintain the mobile gambling service they had at their former venue, capitalizing on recent legislation that permits it with only a digital license. Nevertheless, the scheme encountered an obstacle. The Arizona Indigenous Gaming Association, alongside numerous Native American nations, are contesting the hockey team’s entitlement to conduct online betting at the university location. They contend that the legislation was not intended for this type of circumstance. The team, however, is left feeling disgruntled. They highlight that the law is not perfectly transparent, particularly since the university facility has a reduced seating limit compared to their prior home. It’s a textbook example of a legal gray zone, leaving the franchise unsure of their subsequent action.

Bradley Blewsoe Downs, an attorney advocating for the Arizona Gaming Association, opposed altering the legislation enacted only a year ago to suit the Coyotes. He contends that the Coyotes’ suggested revisions weaken the tribes’ sole authority to manage casinos within Arizona.

Downs asserted, ‘This agreement was forged between the tribal nations and the professional sports organizations and franchises, and now to renege on that, particularly in under a year, simply to resolve what is essentially a self-created predicament…that’s not an issue this group should be burdened with.”
