Crown Sydney Casino Cuts Hours and Jobs Amidst Financial Struggles

Sydneys Crown Casino is reducing its operating schedule and laying off 180 workers. It appears the allure and excitement haven’t attracted the anticipated crowds. This announcement comes mere weeks after they were forced to close a complete gaming level due to its desolate state.

To minimize expenses, the casino will now operate on a modified schedule, closing between 2am and 10am Monday through Thursday, and from 2am to 10am on Friday. Weekends will have slightly adjusted hours, opening at 2pm and closing at 4am on Saturday and 2am on Sunday.

This is not the first instance of staff reductions for the casino. Since resuming operations in August 2022, they have already released 275 employees due to a combination of elevated operational expenses and consequences stemming from anti-money laundering inquiries.

Mark McWhinnie, the Chief Executive Officer of Crown Sydney, stated they are exploring alternative roles for the impacted employees at their other casino locations in Perth and Melbourne. He stressed that their primary concern is providing support to the 180 team members affected by these adjustments.

This development follows closely on the heels of threatened walkouts by Crown employees in Melbourne just a few weeks prior. The casino giant appears to be navigating challenging circumstances.

A just compensation increase is warranted! Enhanced remuneration for weekend and holiday labor is necessary, and our work schedules should prioritize a healthier equilibrium between our professional and personal lives. Length of service should carry weight – our salary adjustments should reflect our tenure with the company.”
